Nagasaki, Japan
For most travelers, Nagasaki is a symbol of the horrors of war. But this beautiful city on Kyushu offers timeless charm as well. In 1945, an estimated 75,000 people perished when the city became the second target of a nuclear attack. Today, Nagasaki's Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum draw visitors from around the world.
Peace Memorial Park
Nagasaki's memorial park and its Atomic Bomb Museum are near ground zero—center of the atomic blast that leveled the city on August 9, 1945.
Shimabara
This well-preserved, 16th century town features a samurai village and a superb, reconstructed feudal castle.
Glover Gardens
Named after Scottish merchant Thomas Glover, the gardens are home to Glover House, Japan's oldest example of Western architecture.
